Personality: Lanaya was once a cheery optimist pony, who loved to get into long talks and debates with anypony on almost any shared interest. She was kind and open, and could put up with even the most annoying ponies, viewing their pros over their cons. Now she is secluded and depressed, questioning herself and others. When she does go out, she prefers quiet places away from crowds. She isn't rude but looks for ways to get out of conversations or the company of others.

Likes: Books ranging from fantasy to theory. Classical music and piano solos. Rainy days. Sweet foods and snacks.

Dislikes: Anything that reminds of her magic. Laughter and parties. Small talk. Bitter foods such as lemons. Ponies who crowd or question her.

Special Talent: Study of Magic

History: Lanaya was born and raised in Canterlot in a decently wealthy family with a good reputation. She was trained to act like a noble, good manners and morals, but she was drawn to the lure of magic. Quickly taking to studying and practising magic put her ahead of the rest of the unicorns her age level and even some above her.

Her parents seeing her potential and interest in magic applied her to Canterlot's School for Gifted Unicorns. She quickly moved forward in her studies, passing most magic with ease in her classes and becoming one of the best unicorns in the school. As she aged and furthered into more classes , other ponies eventually fanned out. The fact that magic was being less studied concerned her, feeling there was much more to learn and create, she joined a group of students and professors working on projects in all kinds of fields of magic.

She focused on Alteration and Animation, two fields most replaced with illusions. Most Unicorns couldn't change matter into a new item and those that could still had trouble. Animation on the other hand was considered impossible, the power to make animated creatures such as Golems was only available to powers such as alicorns or other powerful magical creatures. Lanaya fought back, stating Golems could be the next step in advancing Equestria by serving as a workforce for dangerous and difficult work and even providing extra security as a guard force. There was much debate, math, study and finally  after two years, they approved a experiment. Setting up a lab, and many other elements they prepared. Lanaya was the head of the spell, channeling the magic into magically enhanced clay body, while other scientist stood by to support if needed. She concentrated her magic into the body, setting up the spells created to animate the body, and almost succeeded. Just as the Golem started to stir something went wrong, and it rejected the magic, rebounding back up the channel and to the source, Lanaya. The sudden return of magic overwhelmed her and she lost control, causing an explosion and blacking out.

She woke up three months later in a hospital bed from suffering intense wounds and going into a coma. She was only a shell of her former self and had to take therapy just to relearn walking and even magic use, though her magic never fully recovered. After recovering back to a semi healthy state, minus most of her magic, she entered a depression. Without her full magic she felt incomplete and useless. She returned to the university and received many looks of respects, scorn, and pity. She contributed her brilliant mind in some projects but without her magic it just wasn't the same. She resigned and returned home to enter a long dark depression. Lanaya deals with episodes, pain in her nervous system from her loss of magic.

Acceptance

Your OC itself looks very good. The only possible area of concern is her talent.

While magic is an acceptable talent, an OC should not have god-like powers. I can see you have tried to restrict it, especially with Lanaya losing some of her abilities.
Could you please explain the limits of Lanaya's powers? What are the largest alteration and animation spells that she can cast?

I'd put a lot of thought into this. Though she excelled in most all of her classes she is not on the same power level of Twilight Sparkle or any Alicorn. The show, in my opinion, really plays down Unicorns and makes TS seem like the only powerful one (Minus that deal with trixie). Lanaya was taught through a classroom and not an Alicorn.

As for Alteration and Animation, I would say they were more of blueprints. Alteration was in the show,(Not counting the Discord stuff), but Animation was not as far as I could see. The Golem test was a test and prototype created through 2 years of study, small tests, ect. But it still failed.

As of right now she has close to no magic. Since there is no cannon info on how to lose magic (asides from poison joke) I'm pretty much having her connection to her magic almost completely gone. She can do basic stuff like levitation, but its strained, weak, and causes her pain.

As far as God-Like, she's nowhere near that and even if she regained her former magic she couldn't move solar masses or turn into a alicorn.

The flaw was pointed out to me. Her talent has been changed to the study of magic over just magic which could send in some bad ideas. She has a interest and ease in studying magic, not just being super magic.

I made her as scholar not OP Unicorn, whom has to deal with depression and the struggle to make friends.
